River
Main
Description
River Map Summary
Most significant tributary of the Rhine, cruiseable up to Bamberg.

History
The original name of the Main is from the celtic "Moin" or "Mogin", before it was latinised to "Moenus" or "Menus". A short stretch of the Main river in the vicinity of Mainz / Bingen formed the roman boarder between civilisation and Germania Magna.

Geography
The source of the Main is in the bavarian district of Franconia, at the confluence of the Red and the White Main. From Bamberg on the Main River flows through the German Highlands via Würzburg through the Spessart mountains. At Aschaffenburg the Lower Main Lowlands begin. Now the stream runs through more industrial cities in southern Hessen, before it discharges intoe the Rhine River at Wiesbaden.

Locks
Total of 34 locks. All of them have to be passed if you cruise from the Rhine to Bamberg (in order to enter the Main Danube Canal - going to Nuremberg or further down to Regensburg).

Cruise it
There is no cruise that only includes the Main River. Usually you'll cruise the Main in two days up to Bamberg before you enter the Main Danube Canal. Most cruises emphasize the upper part of the river, Bamberg, Würzburg and the little medieval villages in the Spessart, like Wertheim. Some christmas cruises just last for 4-7 days and cruise Nuremberg to Frankfurt.
